It was a gorgeous day today and I love seeing the bright sun after rain. I prefer to be outside on a beautiful day like this but sometime getting outside is just not an option. So on such days I lift up blinds from my window and enjoy the sunshine. Today when I came home from work, the sun was still bright. I relaxed back with a glass of smoothie, not just any smoothie but chikoo smoothie.
Chikoo is a deliciously sweet fruit, which looks like a smooth skinned round potato. It is easy to digest and comes packed with vitamins, minerals and many health benefiting anti oxidants. The flesh of fully ripe chikoo ranges from pale yellow to an earthy brown color with a grainy texture.
It is also known by the name Sapota or sapodilla or mud apple. It originated in Southern Mexico and Central America. Then it spread all over the tropical belt and is now also grown in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Malaysia. The fruit shows up in the market in summers and during peak winter. Each chikoo tree bears fruit twice a year. In India the main season is from December to March. In Mexico there are two seasons: February-April and October to December. In a way,Β one can enjoy this fruit all through the year.
Its digestible pulp gives an instant energy boost as it contains the simple sugars, fructose and sucrose. The best thing about this fruit is that it is fat free and this makes it an excellent source to curb the sweet cravings. Plus its high in fiber so helps keep you regular. The skin is also edible but is slightly tart. It is best eaten just by itself or in a milk shake. I have heard of chikoo ice cream but never got a chance to try. The chikoo smoothie results a light beige color. I have added a couple of strawberries to give it a chocolate color because my daughter does not eat or drink anything white or close to white.
Satisfying and energizing smoothie
Ingredients
- 4-5 chikoo/ sapodilla (I used brown sugar variety)
- 2 strawberries (optional)
- 1 1/2 cup regular or almond milk
- Ice cubes (optional)
- Imitation chocolate to garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Peel and remove the seeds from chikoos.
- Wash and cut strawberries into halves.
- In a blender puree chikoos and strawberries with milk.
- Add ice if you like. Blend more until it becomes really smooth.
- Pour in two glasses. Garnish with imitation chocolate.

We too have this fruit over here and its sort of called like the word you have mentioned, Cikcu. Thata a lovely smoothie you have done with this fruit though we normally eat the fruit as it is. Surely perfect as a healthy start up for the day or the hot and burning weather we go through at times.

This one is new to me! I will need to seek it out. The smoothie does look very refreshing-yum. Glad to stop in and learn something new here. Enjoy the weekend!

You’re introducing me to a new fruit here–we have a lot of Asian markets, though, so I’ll keep an eye out for it. The smoothie is a great color!

I had no idea what a chikoo was until now so thanks for the information. I love that it could be a fat free option for suppressing my sweet tooth. I see now that I’m going to have to look for it next time I go to the Mexican market. I love smoothies so this looks like a great way to introduce myself to this fruit.

Gosh, you’re making me remember all the Tropical fruits I’ve been missing out on the last 20 years since I’ve been living in the UK! I love Chiku but never knew it was called Sapodilla! Thanks, you learn something everyday! This looks like it would hit all the right spots after a work out! xx

I absolutely love chickoo and a chickoo smoothie is just what I need. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find them here in Fl. I get to have it only when I visit India . Missing home after seeing your post balvinder.

Oooooh, we call this ‘Ciku’ here in Malaysia, but it is still pronounced the same way anyway;)
