This recipe is inspired by tofu burger of 101 recipes. I had it bookmarked from quite some time but did not get a chance to try on. Least did I know that I would create another recipe out of that.
Update May 13, 2023
Since we love these patties so much and make very often I thought a video would be perfect to share with you!
It so happened that my daughter’s friends were meeting at our house to work upon a project. She asked me to make a filling snack which everybody can eat. She stressed on ‘everybody‘ so that I understand what she exactly meant. I asked, if tortillas chips with salsa, nachos or popcorn would work. My daughter looked at me with questioning eyes and said,
” Seriously mom? Popcorn and chips. My friends will stay for 3-4 hours until we finish our work”.
OK, I can order Pizza.
“No mom, a couple of snacks…something filling…..you are the one who keeps telling me to eat healthy”.
I don’t know what else to make which your friends will like.
“Mom, think of something. Check your recipe book. You write a blog. Take this as a small challenge”.
My daughter knows how to get something she wants by bringing my blog in the conversation. I checked the fridge and then my bookmarked recipes. I had firm tofu in the fridge so instantly I figured out what I am going to make. I took up my daughter’s challenge and made these lovely sesame tofu patties. I grabbed the idea of adding sunflower seeds and cashews to the patties from 101 recipes. In place of bread crumbs, I used flattened rice flakes. It acts as a very good binder, I use it in making other veggie patties. The crowning step was to roll them in sesame seeds for a crisp crust. The patties came out crispy and very tasty. I served the patties with salad and sambal dipping sauce. I could see the face expression on my recipe testers that they liked it, what I served; as there were was none left for me.
I usually make the all purpose dipping sauce with thick (strained) yogurt but I did not have any that day so had to use regular homemade yogurt. It turned out great but was a little runny.
SESAME AND TOFU PATTIES (vegan)
Ingredients:
350 gm extra firm organic tofu
1/2 cup chiwra (flattened rice flakes) or 3/4 cup boiled and mashed potato
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup raw cashews
1 tbsp chili garlic sauce (sriracha or sambal, if using sambal add 1 garlic clove to the mixture)
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp cilantro, chopped
1 1/2 -2 tsp cumin powder
salt or soy sauce to taste
5 tbsp sesame seeds for rolling the patties
oil for cooking patties
Method:
- Rinse chiwra in a strainer under warm running water as you do for quinoa. Chiwra will become soft. Let it sit in the strainer.
- Place tofu in between paper towels or clean cheese cloth. Press something heavy on top. Set aside for 15 minutes to remove extra moisture.
- Place cashews and sunflower seeds in a food processor. Pulse few times.
- Cut tofu into few big pieces. Add it to the food processor bowl along with hydrated chiwra. Process until the mixture comes together. You do not want to make into a paste. The mixture will still look a little crumbly.
- Transfer to a bowl and add cumin powder, lemon juice, chopped cilantro, salt (soy sauce) and sriracha (if using sambal add 1 raw garlic clove while pulsing cashews and sun flower seeds). If using mashed potato instead of chiwra, add that too. Mix together.
- Divide the mixture into 8-10 even size balls.
- Place sesame seeds in a plate. Roll the balls in sesame seeds. Form patties.
- Pour 1 tbsp oil into a non stick pan and Spread it around. Heat the pan on medium heat.
- Place 4-5 patties and cook them for 1-2 minutes on each side or until nice golden brown. (The patties will be soft. Gently flip only once). Add oil to the pan every time you add new batch of patties.
- Serve it with sambal dipping sauce. I made it from the leftover sambal sauce I had in the fridge when I made sambal shrimps. These patties can be made in big batches and freeze them for quick weeknight dinner or for unexpected guests.
All Purpose “SAMBAL” Dipping sauce (not vegan)
Ingredients:
1 tbsp sambal sauce (1 tbsp sambal+1/2 tbsp rice vinegar blended)
2-3 tbsp mayo
3 tbsp thick yogurt or sour cream
1 tbsp honey (it’s not needed if you use homemade thick yogurt)
zest of half a lemon
a little lemon juice
Method:
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and you have a finger licking dipping sauce.
I hope you give this recipe a try and if you do, let me know how you did. I would love to hear your thoughts. Snap a photo and share it with me on Facebook or Instagram. Be sure to tag it #simpleglutenfreekitchen so I don’t miss it.

My kind of food and I will love it very much. Thanks for sharing and giving me ideas on Vegetarian dishes because at times I am lost on what to cook for myself being a vegetarian though my hubby still have his meat outside. He too will not mind because after all, he agrees that vegetarian food will do a whole of good for our system.

I love what you’ve made. Saving it for my friend, and for me. I have a good friend, who is gluten intolerant. She doesn’t have a computer, so when I see gluten free recipes, I save it for her. Then I make it and show her how easy it is to cook your own. She slowly starts to make hew own meals, getting away from the processed food. I am happy when I can find some recipe for he, thank you for sharing!
