Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. When I was growing up, my mom made sure we ate breakfast every singe day. In fact I looked forward to breakfast each time because they were a treat with something new always. If you’re interested, in knowing the recipes that my mother used to prepare, you will find many of them on my blog. I’m glad I follow the same tradition with my family. I love waking up before the rest of the family to a quiet house and cook hot breakfast. There are days when my daughter would rush and grab breakfast on the go but I try my best to cook early (and she also try) to sit down at the table together when we can.
French toast has always been one of our quick and easy breakfast, although before coming to Canada I never had a French toast that was sweet. Because my mom always made it savory and we had it with tomato and chilli sauce. I will share this recipe with you sometime next year. Today I have a sweet version to which I had slowly grown addicted. Panettone is a delicious sweet bread. I started making my own gluten free panettone from last year and I think it makes the best French toast that almost tastes like a dessert.
Breakfast that almost tastes like a dessert.
Ingredients
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp cream
- 2 thick slices of panettone
- 2 tsp freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp butter
- freshly grated zest of 1/2 orange
- orange segments, to serve
- 3 tbsp yogurt (mine is made from 1% milk, so it was kind of thin, if you use greek yogurt, your sauce will be thick)
- 1 tsp icing sugar
- 1 tbsp orange juice
- a pinch of orange zest
Instructions
- To make the orange yogurt sauce, mix together the yogurt, orange juice, icing sugar and a pinch of zest until smooth. Set aside.
- To make the panettone french toast, put eggs, cream, orange juice, and zest in a wide, shallow bow and beat well.
- Heat the butter in a 9-10" wide non stick pan.
- Soak /dip the gluten free panettone briefly in orange egg mixture, turning over so that each side is coated.
- Remove the bread and place in the heated pan.
- Spoon any remaining egg mixture over the panettone and cook both sides until golden brown.
- Serve immediately with orange segments and spoon orange yogurt sauce over it.

My favourite too! This looks like a fantastic meal to kick start the day!

French toast is a common breakfast here too! I have not tried it with orange juice but added cinnamon and nutmeg to the egg, milk dipping mix. Orange would make it zesty…so should try that!

A beautiful breakfast. I agree with you…I think breakfast is the best meal of the day. I look forward to it the most and sitting down with my family to a hot breakfast on weekends is the best. We are taking advantage and doing that everyday during this holiday break. That’s one beautiful plate – I have yet to make a panettone French toast…and I am now also intrigued about the savory ones!

Balvinder this totally sounds like a breakfast my family would love. I bet the house smells amazing too. Great recipe and its a bonus that it’s gluten free.
