I was feeling a bit tired this week, so I opted for an easy meal for Friday’s dinner. It’s so quick and straightforward that I even filmed a video despite my fatigue. I felt compelled to make the video because it had been raining off and on for the whole week, and I typically photograph and shoot videos only when the weather is nice and bright. You can watch the video on my YouTube channel here.
This simple and tasty vegan meal is an example of what you can quickly put together if you have tofu, some pantry spices, oil, and veggies. With a simple dry seasoning mix, these tofu steaks turn out so delicious. Tofu is quite bland on its own, so the spices add depth of flavor and color. I simply make this with firm tofu. It does not fall apart, and you don’t need to press it like crazy. Pressing it can make it unnecessarily dry. I sear the seasoned tofu steaks in very little oil in a non-stick pan.
While you could eat them straight with ketchup for a snack, I love to give them elevated plating and make them into a main meal. We usually skip eating grains at night so I served the tofu steaks alongside boiled sweet potato and broccolini, and topped with zesty orange sauce to make the flavors pop. This spicy tofu steak recipe is perfect during summer, but we honestly love it all year round!
Ingredients
- 500 g firm tofu
- 3/4 tbsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp roasted cumin powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tbsp oil for pan frying tofu
- 1/4 cup smooth peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter, sunflower seed butter
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- Zest of an orange
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
- Salt and pepper optional ( I haven't added)
Instructions
- Add peanut butter, zest, ginger, and orange juice in a blender jar. Give a quick blend.
- You can warm the sauce before serving.
- Add red chili powder, salt, cumin powder, and coriander powder to a small bowl. Stir to mix.
- Pat tofu dry with paper towels to remove any excess water.
- Cut into 8 slices. Rub spice mix onto each tofu steak (both side) pressing spice down into tofu with your fingers to make sure it adheres.
- Heat little oil (about a tsp) in a non-stick pan on medium heat.
- Add tofu steaks (3 or 4, depending on the size of pan). Cook on either side until tofu is nicely browned, not burnt.
- Wipe the pan with paper towel before reading little for tofu.
- While the next batch of tofu is browning make the sides. ( I boiled sweet potato and sauteed broccolini).
- Serve warm tofu, sliced sweet potato, broccolini, topped with warm orange sauce.
