Visually Appealing Citrus Fruit Salad

by Balvinder. 7 Comments

One of the best things about winter is the abundance of citrus fruits, which are not only a feast for the eyes but also delicious in taste. They provide a bright respite from the short, dark winter days. These fruits inspire us to enjoy them in many ways, which is why I’ve made this tasty and refreshing Citrus fruit salad today.

This visually appealing citrus fruit salad is the perfect dish to make in winter! It combines a variety of colorful oranges with pear and pomegranate. If you can’t find the exact oranges I’ve used, feel free to substitute with all navel oranges or a combination of oranges and grapefruit.

I like to dress my citrus salad with a sprinkle of salt and red chili powder, and sometimes a drizzle of olive oil. While fresh fruit is delicious on its own, the addition of a savory touch and a hint of spice really elevates the citrus flavors. This combination enhances the natural sweetness and tanginess of the fruit, adding depth. My childhood memory of a fruit salad was oranges paired with thinly sliced white radish, known as mooli in India. It wasn’t dressed, but seasoned with salt and red chili powder—just enough to bring out the fruit’s natural flavors without making it spicy. I’ve followed the same approach for this Citrus Fruit Salad.

The citrus fruit salad continue to release their juices as the salad sits, so its best served with in 30 minutes of being seasoned. To make is advance, cut and store the oranges separately, de seed pomegranate. Pears brown easily and get mushy if marinated  for too long so cut them last.

Ingredients

  • 2 navel oranges
  • 2 cara cara oranges
  • 2 blood oranges
  • 2-3 mandarins
  • 1 pear
  • 1 pomegranate
  • Salt to taste
  • Red chili powder to taste.
  • Fresh mint

Instructions

  1. De seed the pomegranate.
  2. Peel the oranges with a paring knife, removing both the skin and the white pith. For some varieties like navel oranges, I cut them into segments, carefully removing the thin, white membrane between the segments. For others, I slice them crosswise into ¼-½ inch rounds. Mixing these cutting methods adds variety and makes the presentation extra pretty.
  3. Slice pears into 1/2 " pieces.
  4. Arrange the fruit on a serving platter. Sprinkle salt and red chili powder.
  5. Garnish with fresh mint leaves, and serve.

This salad is absolutely gorgeous! I love a good citrus salad, and I also love blood oranges. I haven’t had those in a long time, the last time I did I used them with salmon and it was wonderful. Thanks for the reminder.
